INFORMATION SOURCES USED BY TEA PRODUCERS WITHIN THE TEA RUNNING PROJECT

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out in the Eastern Black Sea Region cities of Artvin, Rize, and Trabzon where tea cultivation is intensively used. The primary purpose of the study was to investigate the pruning which is aimed to improve tea gardens and provide high quality tea production; in terms of the experiences of tea producers, factors considered during pruning, pruning methods, and sources of pruning information. Participants of the study are a stratisfied sample of 130 farmers who were selected from the predetermined 13 villages of the three provinces. Results of the study showed that producers have enough pruning experience and they consider almost all factors which influence the success in pruning. In addition, it was found that yield pruning and pruning for rejuvenation were intensively used in the region; and own family elders for yield pruning and Çaykur extension staff for pruning for rejuvenation were the most imporant sources of pruning information.
